Langkawi, Malaysia is a medium sized island off the west coast of mainland Malaysia. We crossed the border to Malaysia by boat from Ko Lipe, Thailand! The immigration process is super simple by boat and a neat experience! We spent a few days exploring the highlight points of the island starting with its beaches. The beaches were beautiful but a lot different from the other countries we have previously traveled too. But to be fair, we explored the island during off season, so it was more windy and wavy which stirs up the sand. Our favorite beach was Tanjung Rhu. It had extreme backdrops and the beautiful limestone rocks coming out of the ground. Pantai Cenang beach was also really nice but you have to be careful of all the water activities going on.

We also spent a few days exploring inland Langkawi. We rented a motorbike and went exploring to the different peaks, look out points, waterfalls, and even took the cable car up to the top of Mount Machinchang, the second highest peak on Langkawi. If you plan it right, the views are incredible, and you will have a full 360 degree view! The cable car is the steepest on earth and you also will have access to the famous sky bridge that also offers great views. Unfortunately, we didn’t have good luck with the weather, so it was pretty cloudy at the top. Intermittently we did get some blue skies to check out some of the views so that was great! If you don’t want to pay for the cable car you can also hike to the two peaks and then over to the sky bridge. This didn’t even cross our mind since it was extremely humid, and it only cost 14 US dollars. The waterfalls were lacking water, but we still made the treck up and the view was worth it. At Seven wells falls you can swim in the upper portions in seven different water holes.
Our favorite thing about Malaysia was the people and the food! It is a Islamic country depending on what island you are on. In Langkawi it is also Islamic, and the culture can be very strict. This made us timid at first as we didn’t know what to expect or the proper way to act. But after having a great conversation with our first guesthouse owner Leena she informed us that they do not care how we dress or speak because we are our own person and have our own religion and belief. It was really reassuring and made us feel at ease to not have to worry! Everyone we met was extremely kind and welcoming. The food was amazing! Inn Langkawi there is a great mix of Malay food and Indian cuisine. We explored a lot of the different dishes! I must admit my favorite is the Indian food with a Malay twist. Fresh Naan bread and homemade dips I can’t even pronounce every day for less than one dollar! All the amazing spices and flavors in the food, and the curry… oh my the curry was to die for! If visiting Malaysia and a food junkie, I recommend also visiting Penang. It is the food capital of Malaysia!
